Is Secret Diary of a Camp Counselor worth parting with your cash for? I’m guessing that’s what you really want to know. Have you checked out my Testimonials page filled with rave reviews? Yes? I see, you still want a little bit more reassurance that this first-hand account of summer camp is the one for you.
Well I’ve just done a Google search on Secret Diary of a Camp Counselor to see what the harsh critics that trawl the internet have been saying, and I’m actually a little bit proud :).
Take this from Good Reads…
‘Sharkcrow’ writes: “This one is probably only for people that have gone and worked in a summer camp in the US. It’s funny how much of what Lucy wrote rang true for me – hell, parts of it read like my own diaries I kept when working at summer camp.
It’s one of those experiences that people that haven’t done it don’t seem to understand, and because this is written in diary format and doesn’t seem to have a lot of extra information added after the fact (eg not many ‘characters’ were really fleshed out – it appears to be the actual diary Lucy kept) I think to really enjoy and relate to this book, you need to have experienced something similar.
Which I can. I loved how one minute she was great friends with someone but the next day hated them because they weren’t pulling their weight. It was so genuine and relatable.”
And then ‘Joyce’ comments: “Since I am going to Camp this summer, I enjoyed this well written book more than anything! I read it within one day and sometimes I forgot that is was non fiction! I would recommend it to everyone, not just camp people!”

Over on the Camp America forum…
Camp Counselor Heidi says: “I read Lucy Harper’s book ‘Secret Diary of a Camp Counselor’ in a few days, I couldn’t put it down! It made me so excited and gave me a good idea of what camp will be like. Of course things will be a little different for me because I’m at a special needs camp but I definitely recommend the book to anyone going to camp for the first time!”
And Camp Counselor Sarah comments: “Hi, I’ve read Lucy’s book too, its great, I hope I have some good adventures like her.”
Ooo look at Amazon.com…
Rosie Bartlett says: “It made me laugh, it made me cry, but most importantly it made me so unbelievably excited for this summer! Such an honest and real account of life at camp, right down to the feelings towards the children. Hilarious at times and I just couldn’t stop reading, practically read it in a day, all the way to getting my visa approved! Loved reading how your friendships evolved and you all sound like such a crazy but cool and caring group. Can’t wait to make friendships with people all over the world… or even just England 😉 Thanks for sharing your story with us Lucy – I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about going to camp, or to be honest, even just for a good read!”
Kat says: “OMG what an awesome book! I’ve been thinking about going to camp this summer and now I definitely am!! I love Cara… what a crazy girl! I can’t believe what an epic summer you had.. LOL. I’m so excited for camp. Thanks Lucy this book is amazing!”

And on Amazon.co.uk…
J says: “I bought it at about 11pm last night and only put it down at 3am to get some sleep. Between that time I had some genuine LOLs and produced so many tears I actually had to put it down for 10 minutes to pull myself together. Then I finished it at around 12pm this afternoon, it was just so addictive. It’s full of so many shocks and laughs and genuinely some really interesting things about what goes on at camp. Actually might read it again I enjoyed it so much. You actually feel like you’re there with her and the book gives you an account of how you will actually be spending your days at camp.”
