Wednesday 20th July
9:09am I swear, as soon as my head hits the pillow at night I just conk out. I’ve never slept so well as I do here, I’m exhausted by the time I get in bed. I remember those first nights at camp when I couldn’t sleep – it genuinely feels like a lifetime ago. The kids could run a riot now for all I know about them after hours.
My new schedule has started. The visual arts boss was quite nice about the scheduling, although a bit weird at the same time…
Her: “I’ve given you and Cara the same period off as I know you’re best friends and like to hang out together all the time.”
Hmmm, felt like she was getting at us a bit there. She was doing that classic bitchy girl thing of disguising a mean dig with a kind overtone. Whatever, at least we get to teach a few lessons together. This is my day in session three…
- Major 1: Rocketry with Cara
- Minor 1: Photo with Rebecca
- Minor 2: Radio BY MYSELF
- Major 2: Crafts with Cara
- Minor 3: Off
- Major 3: Jewellery with a few of the second session counselors.
Zoe’s still not bothering to do any work in the bunk and trying to get her up in the morning is a nightmare. I’m actually doing her a favour by waking her up and getting her out of the bunk every morning, but I know she thinks I’m getting at her. Why doesn’t she just get the fuck out of bed when the rest of us do? Apparently they’re getting well pissed off with her up at drama as well. She needs to be careful; Earl won’t stand for any of this shit if he hears about it.
The leftover Mean Girls and the new kids are actually getting on really well, I’m shocked! Britney is being really nice and even sharing her Fiji waters with them. Mornings have got easier and everyone seems to be a lot happier. The two little ones from Miami – Alexa and Stephanie – are so sweet. They’re always dancing around the bunk and they’re so lovely, and funny too. I think they’ve taken a shine to me; at breakfast they chose their minors especially so they could spend them with me. Stephanie’s got this white-blonde wild hair that always makes her look a bit scrappy. She is girly, but in a tomboy sort of way. She’s just not into clothes, or boys or fashion and she always seems like she’s in a bit of a fairy world. She’s got coloured braces on her teeth, but she’ll be stunning when she’s older, you can tell. Alexa is the more grown up out of the two. They’re cousins, but best friends too – I’m sure she’ll lead Stephanie astray at some point in their lives. Alexa has an eye for the boys and enjoys dressing up in slutty clothes in the bunk – making her skirt shorter by rolling it up and tucking the bottom of her t-shirt over and in to make a bra top. Those old chestnuts. She’s still very sweet behind all that though, they both are. They’re just two normal teenagers growing up and enjoying being at camp.
1:55pm Emily and me are going to start running in the mornings. We’re going to meet at 7am to run around the camp lake – I’m guessing it’s about three miles – we’ll see how it goes. I need to do something, I’m eating and drinking so much here, I can’t believe
I thought it would be a detox. All this fatty food is pumping up my thighs a treat. I cannot go back to England fatter than when I left.
In ‘sunshine time’ today the other counselors were talking about their art qualifications. Cara and me are the only counselors in visual arts without any. I never registered that everyone else was actually trained in all this creative joy, I just thought they were blagging it like us. This explains a lot.
After lunch Ben came to see me in the bunk and we were joking around about how boys aren’t allowed in the bunk even if they’re counselors. And then he came up the steps, through the side door and out the front. It genuinely felt so naughty. The girls were squealing and my heart was racing. It’s funny how ingrained the rules can be. We’re institutionalised – all it was, was Ben walking through, but I felt like he was committing a crime and I actually got a rush from it. Mmmm, bad boy hey?
