Wednesday 20th July
7:13pm Me, Pip and Zoe have just worked out how much we get paid an hour. I’m working 12 weeks rather than nine so it’s a bit different for me compared with them, but for the whole summer I get $1200, which is about £700. If I divide this by 12 it’s £58 a week, my week is over six days long, but I’ll say six to make things easy, so that’s £9.72 per day. Each day is about 15 hours long, which is a grand total of about 65p an hour. Wow! We get food and board and no one was doing it for the money in the first place, but to work that out makes me pretty sad. I hope this is the hardest I will ever work in my life, it better be.
8:38pm Just been talking to one of the Mean Girls – who’s not so mean anymore – she’s desperate to go home. She was telling me that all she wants is to spend time with her dad. Her mum died when she was young and she thinks he pays for her to come to camp so he doesn’t actually have to be with her. She wanted to come for three weeks to see Britney and everyone, but she says he saw it as an opportunity to get rid of her for longer. She’s the one with the diamond watch – sounds like a case of poor little rich girl to me. Whatever happens, I’ve learnt that kids are never happy with their parenting.
11:45pm I really don’t like the way Rebecca treats her supposed best friend Jo. Jo is absolutely lovely and is such a great friend to Rebecca with all her whining and misery, but Rebecca just uses her when there’s no one ‘cooler’ around. As soon as someone more interesting comes along she drops her straight away. A few of us were sat at the canteen earlier and Rebecca was boasting about how she and Jo were going to spend some ‘quality time’ together tonight because they’re ‘best friends’, blah blah. No one cares, but she likes to share these things. Then one of the kitchen staff came along and asked if anyone wanted to go to her bunk for a few beers – so we all did. It was obvious Jo didn’t want to go, she’s a good girl and of course you’re not allowed to drink on camp, but she came anyway as I presume she wanted to spend this ‘quality time’ with Rebecca. Then one of the guys asked if anyone wanted to go to town, as there was a space in the car. Rebecca was pretty much out the door and in the car with her seatbelt clicked in before he’d even got his keys out. You could see Jo was like, “What the fuck?” Rebecca thinks she’s better than Jo, and the rest of us actually.
I definitely don’t like her attitude at the moment.
When we were at the canteen earlier Pete was taking the piss out of Danielle for not going to university – he can be a real dick sometimes. I’m not sure he’s actually a very nice person really.
I think I forgive him too much because he’s funny. He goes to Manchester University doing some business degree or something.
I hate it when people our age think you have to go university to be worth something.
1:03am Just had the midnight meeting. When I arrived Ben was waiting for me with his big, woolly hoody for me to wear. He’s too cute. I sat snuggled next to him in the meeting, he smells so good and he’s so warm.
Earl and Bud have found out that everyone’s nicking ice cream at night.
Earl: “Don’t we feed you enough?”
They give us three meals a day, pizza and ice cream in the evening and then keep the canteen open for us at night too and we still want more. We’re animals, there’s nothing more to say.
He also said:
– We’re all getting new porch lights fitted, as apparently the campers keep getting fingered on the bunk terraces. Thankfully I’ve seen none of this.
– They’re providing buses at night and on days off for counselors so now no one should be driving anywhere. They’re not doing it on lazy days though, so I don’t know what we’re going to do? I guess we should just be grateful we get one for nights into town.
– We’re allowed to the GC now, as long as we drink pop.
Hmmm, don’t think that will catch on somehow.
Cara and me were going to go to Mexico after camp, but we just can’t afford it, which sucks. It’s so expensive for such a short amount of time. We’re thinking Florida now, but don’t know yet. Ordered my iPod today – VERY excited! I’m going to sell all my CDs to try and afford a snowboarding holiday when I get home. I really want to travel everywhere now and forever – none of this office job malarkey for me. Emily, Pip and Zoe said I should go to Oz next year and Cara might do the year-long working visa so I could stay with her while I’m over there. I want to go to Dublin to see her too, and I want to go to South Africa…
