Friday 24th June
2:02pm Cara and me went to try fencing today with my now ex-bunkmate Jude. We put on the big smelly outfits and had a bit of a play, but I’m not sure I really understand the point of it – or that it’s even exercise. I got a bit hot just because of the suit, but apart from that it didn’t seem hard. Ah well, was fun to give it a go. I could see Cara shudder as she took off the suit that all the kids had been sweating away in for the past two weeks. She hates anything dirty, gruesome or grotesque, she looked traumatised. I think Jude was a bit annoyed with us for not giving it a proper go. God I’m glad we don’t have to work together in the bunk anymore. When she got promoted she also got her own double bunk just behind ours. It’s cool, she’s got her own bathroom and it’s just her in there, she can even lock the door, wow.
Cara’s so happy and confident when we teach together, but it makes me sad when I see her in her lesson with the other counselors. She’s supposed to teach jewellery with Rebecca – which admittedly she has no interest in – but all she does is sweep the floor. She looked so forlorn earlier, like a starving street urchin trying to earn a dollar. Aww, she kept looking over at the kids too. I can just imagine Rebecca being really condescending to her and making her feel like that’s all she could do. ‘Webecca’ can be really mean sometimes, and abrupt. I’m not sure she realises she’s doing it, but she can make really cutting comments that hurt. She was saying something to me the other day in front of loads of people about how radio wasn’t a real department, and that I had the shittest job on camp. I just let it go over my head; it didn’t bother me that much and I don’t want to fall out with her, but I’m starting to notice that she can actually be a real bitch.
11:43pm All the campers and staff went to a banquet today up at the dining hall. We got dressed up and the kitchen staff cooked loads of fancy food. They normally just hold a banquet at the end of the summer, but as this is the first year they’ve ever done four sessions rather than three, Earl wanted to celebrate the extra thousands of dollars lining his pockets.
We had amazing hors d’oeuvre in the upper camp’s dining hall – king prawns, duck canapés, vol-au-vents – and then we gradually went through to the lower camp’s dining hall to sit down and eat as normal. They made a massive cake with about an inch of frosting, decorated with the outline of one of the bunks and ‘Rockbear 05’ written across the top in even more frosting. Then we just went straight to Canteen and I had a bit of a dance with my campers – I felt like their embarrassing old aunty that was trying to ‘get down with the kids’, so I left them to it.
12:23am God I’m knackered, but I can’t sleep. These girls are so funny when it’s time for bed. They’ll beg for a few minutes of torch time, so obviously I let them. They’ll read or chat to the person in the next bed for about 10 minutes and then thank me, say goodnight, and turn their torches off. Awww, so sweet.
