There are many different kinds of hotels in New York. If you want to splash your camp wages then there are plenty to choose from in and around Times Square. You’ll be in the centre of all the action and save on transport costs too. If you’d rather save your money for the shops, bars and attractions you can always opt for a hostel instead. I stayed at Jazz on Amsterdam Avenue and got exactly what I paid for, no frills, but a comfy bed in a great location.
You just need to work out what is important to you when it comes to accommodation after camp in New York. If you can sacrifice your privacy and stay in a dorm you’ll reap the benefit in dollars. Or you can save money by staying just outside New York, in New Jersey or in Brooklyn. The subway is cheap enough for you to get a travel card and use that to save on money.
Flats and houses
If there are a few of you wanting somewhere to sleep in New York City you could look at renting a flat. Accommodation websites like housetrip.com, airbnb.com or flatnav.com have some great properties, which could work out cheaper for groups.
Couchsurfing has become more and more popular in recent years. You stay at someone’s house for free and in return maybe cook them a few meals or share your brilliant personality and they’ll show you a good time. It’s very popular among older travellers who have a house but maybe not the opportunity to travel, so they bring the travel to them.
You could always try workaway.info. I’ve completed a few projects with them and loved the experience. The host offers free bed and usually board, and in return you work on the project for five hours a day, five days a week. It’s a great opportunity to extend your stay in the USA for as little money as possible.
Another option is to find out which counselors and campers live in NYC and get really good friends with them. Kids are always inviting their counselors home and if you do go it gives the kids some cred and a good ego boost. Just make sure you’re selective on whose houses you stay at, I never went for this route, but I’m told it can get a little awkward when you’re suddenly demoted to house guest from super awesome summer time counselor.
